Defaunation in the Anthropocene

Defaunation in the Anthropocene Rodolfo Dirzo 1 , * ,  Hillary S. Young 2 ,  Mauro Galetti 3 ,  Gerardo Ceballos 4 ,  Nick J. B. Isaac 5 ,  Ben Collen 6 We live amid a global wave of anthropogenically driven biodiversity loss: species and population extirpations and, critically, declines in local species abundance. Particularly, human impacts on animal biodiversity are an under-recognized form of global environmental change. Among terrestrial vertebrates, 322 species have become extinct since 1500, and populations of the remaining species show 25% average decline in abundance. Invertebrate patterns are equally dire: 67% of monitored populations show 45% mean abundance decline. Such animal declines will cascade onto ecosystem functioning and human well-being. Much remains unknown about this “Anthropocene defaunation”; these knowledge gaps hinder our capacity to predict and limit defaunation impacts. Clearly, however, defaunation is both a pervasive compo...

Former Microsoft Employee Talks About Getting Fired - Business Insider

Former Microsoft Employee Talks About Getting Fired - Business Insider : In the 20-minute video, Jerry Berg (a.k.a. Barnacules) goes through what the process was like, what went down, and how he feels about it. Berg had been a Windows software developer for 15 years until the morning of July 17, when he was called in for a meeting. He had no idea what the meeting was about, and there were no warning signs; he hadn't received any negative feedback on his projects. He walked into the meeting to find 150 of his coworkers, all wondering why they were there. Upper management got up to talk, and according to Berg, they were even broken up about it. It was really just a shock for everyone. "It was Microsoft's best kept secret ever," Berg said. Management told the 150 employees that Microsoft was "going in a new direction" and that their roles were no longer necessary. The employees were immediately sent to HR to pick up their severance packages. "Som...

SpaceX scores an early win in its lawsuit against the US government - Quartz

SpaceX scores an early win in its lawsuit against the US government - Quartz : SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket and spacecraft company, hasscored a partial victory in its bid to get a slice of government contracting. Court filings show that a federal judge will review amulti-billion-dollar contractthat was awarded without competition last year to the United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin witha monopoly over US national-security space launches. SpaceX had chargedthe government with violating fair contracting procedures in a lawsuit. The ULA had asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit. The court denied thatmotion (pdf), andalso ordered the US Air Force to enter formal mediation (pdf)with the space start-up. However, it didn’t grant the full scope of SpaceX’s requested judgements, which included voiding the contract and forcing the Air Force to accept more competition. The courtasked the government to producea full record of the process that produc...

(Fake) friends with (Real) benefits — i ❤ data — Medium

(Fake) friends with (Real) benefits — i ❤ data — Medium Buying your way to status on social networks has become standard practice. From Instagram likes to Twitter followers, there’s a growing number of services that promise to bump up your numbers. And they’re quite affordable! I’m not recommending anyone go out and buy followers. In fact, I can’t get over the feeling that it’s pretty sleazy. But I do believe that acquiring just the right amount, as much as I hate to write it, may have a positive long-term effect on acceleration of growth and visibility. If you made it this far down, and you’re not a bot, do me a favor — head on over to Twitter and follow me

Sheryl Sandberg not sorry for Facebook mood manipulation study - The Washington Post : On Wednesday, Facebook’s second-in-command, Sheryl Sandberg, expressed regret over how the company communicated its2012 mood manipulation study of 700,000 unwitting users, but she did not apologize for conducting the controversial experiment. It’s just what companies do, she said. “This was part of ongoing research companies do to test different products, and that was what it was; it was poorly communicated,” Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, told the Wall Street Journal while travelling in New Delhi. “And for that communication we apologize. We never meant to upset you.” Sandberg’s statement was the first public comment by a Facebook executive on the controversy since it erupted over the weekend, prompting anger from many Facebook users and criticism from some academics who said it was unethical to manipulate users’ emotions without informed consent.

Is Airbnb's Rebranding Enough to Overshadow Its Legal Troubles?

Is Airbnb's Rebranding Enough to Overshadow Its Legal Troubles? : Last year, the New York state attorney general subpoenaed Airbnb's user data to look at who was breaking the housing law. Airbnb fought the subpoena, but the judge's decision in the case eventually favored the AG's ability to go after the data. The company agreed to provide anonymized user data this spring; the attorney general has a year to look over it and identify lawbreakers.

The birth of the iPod | Macworld

The birth of the iPod | Macworld Today, Macworld published a  detailed look  at the October 23, 2001 launch of the original iPod.  It’s fascinating to watch the  launch video , especially juxtaposed with the launch  of the original iPhone in January 2007. Presenting in Apple’s limited-capacity Town Hall, rather than the larger expo venue at the Moscone Center, Steve seemed somewhat more subdued than usual. I don’t blame him: Apple was diving headfirst into a totally new consumer market, with angry pundits far from convinced that the purchasing public would be interested in investing $399 in an MP3 player. They were wrong. (Okay, it’s easy to report that now.) In 2001, the portable MP3 playing industry was dominated by cheaper, low-capacity units, like Diamond Multimedia’s  Rio 500 : The Rio 500 was a solid device. I snagged one with 64MB of onboard memory, at a list price of $269, and spent most of 2000 listening to The Eagles’  Greatest Hit...
