Zoom%20classes%20felt%20like%20teaching%20into%20a%20void%20%u2014%20until%20I%20told%20my%20students%20why%20-%20The%20Washington%20Post: At%20least%20one%20teacher%20I%20deeply%20respect%20argues%20that%2C%20even%20without%20an%20official%20policy%2C%20exerting%20any%20kind%20of%20emotional%20pressure%20%u2014%20even%20the%20slightest%20bit%20%u2014%20on%20students%20to%20turn%20their%20cameras%20on%20is%20a%20bad%20practice.%20And%20there%u2019s%20a%20part%20of%20me%20that%20wants%20to%20be%20enough%20of%20a%20teaching%20saint%20to%20follow%20that%20advice.%20But%20I%u2019m%20also%20a%20person%3B%20isolation%20is%20taking%20its%20toll%20on%20me%2C%20too.%20And%20that%20toll%20rose%20when%20I%20tried%20to%20be%20a%20fully%20engaged%20teacher%20getting%20zero%20response%20from%20the%20other%20end.%0ASo%20this%20semester%2C%20on%20the%20first%20day%20of%20class%2C%20I%20gave%20honesty%20a%20shot.%20I%20told%20my%20students%20that%20I%20totally%20understood%20their%20privacy%20concerns%20and%20that%20they%20were%20free%20to%20turn%20off%20their%20cameras%20%u2014%20either%20all%20the%20time%2C%20or%20occasionally.%20There%20were%20hundreds%20of%20good%20reasons%20for%20doing%20it%2C%20I%20said.%20They%20didn%u2019t%20need%20to%20explain%20themselves.%0ABut%20I%20also%20told%20them%20that%2C%20as%20more%20cameras%20go%20off%2C%20my%20teaching%20inevitably%20suffers%2C%20and%20I%20gave%20them%20my%20best%20estimates%20about%20the%20effects%3A%20When%20fewer%20than%20a%20third%20of%20students%20have%20their%20cameras%20off%2C%20there%20is%20no%20impact.%20When%20the%20blank%20screens%20start%20to%20reach%20the%2050%20percent%20mark%2C%20I%20begin%20to%20lose%20my%20feel%20for%20the%20class.%20And%20once%20the%20proportion%20of%20turned-off%20cameras%20hits%20two-thirds%2C%20I%20feel%20profoundly%20cut%20off%20from%20the%20feedback%20I%20need%20to%20do%20even%20a%20vaguely%20decent%20job.%0ASome%20students%20told%20me%20they%20had%20never%20thought%20about%20what%20it%20was%20like%20to%20teach%20remotely.%20%28I%20knew%20that%20I%20had%20trouble%20putting%20myself%20in%20their%20shoes.%29%20And%20they%20listened.%20This%20semester%20is%20light-years%20better%20than%20the%20last.%20On%20most%20days%2C%20I%20can%20see%20somewhere%20between%20half%20and%20two-thirds%20of%20my%20students.%20No%20policy%2C%20no%20further%20comments%20from%20me%2C%20no%20enforcement%20or%20pleading.%20I%20think%20I%20see%20some%20self-regulation%20at%20work%20in%20our%20pedagogical%20ecosystem.%20Whenever%20the%20ratio%20of%20black%20squares%20drifts%20up%20toward%20the%20two-thirds%20mark%2C%20a%20few%20students%20will%20turn%20their%20cameras%20back%20on.%0A
