MAY 2020, NEW ORLEANS | by Founders Fund | Medium: From%20Galileo%20to%20Jesus%20Christ%2C%20heretical%20thinkers%20have%20been%20met%20with%20hostility%2C%20even%20death%2C%20and%20vindicated%20by%20posterity.%20That%20ideological%20outcasts%20have%20shaped%20the%20world%20is%20an%20observation%20so%20often%20made%20it%20would%20be%20bereft%20of%20interest%20were%20the%20actions%20of%20our%20society%20not%20so%20entirely%20at%20odds%20with%20the%20wisdom%20of%20the%20point%3A%20troublemakers%20are%20essential%20to%20mankind%u2019s%20progress%2C%20and%20so%20we%20must%20protect%20them.%20But%20while%20our%20culture%20is%20fascinated%20by%20the%20righteousness%20of%20our%20historical%20heretics%2C%20it%20is%20obsessed%20with%20the%20destruction%20of%20the%20heretics%20among%20us%20today.%20It%20is%20certainly%20true%20the%20great%20majority%20of%20heretical%20thinkers%20are%20wrong.%20But%20how%20does%20one%20tell%20the%20difference%20between%20%u201Cdangerous%u201D%20dissent%2C%20and%20the%20dissent%20that%20brought%20us%20flight%2C%20the%20theory%20of%20evolution%2C%20Non-Euclidean%20geometry%3F%20It%20could%20be%20argued%20there%20are%20no%20%u2018real%u2019%20heretics%20left.%20Perhaps%20we%u2019ve%20arrived%20at%20the%20end%20of%20knowledge%2C%20and%20dissent%20today%20is%20nothing%20more%20than%20mischief%20or%20malice%20in%20need%20of%20punishment.%20But%20be%20the%20nature%20of%20our%20witches%20unclear%2C%20it%20cannot%20be%20denied%20we%u2019re%20burning%20them.%20The%20question%20is%20only%20are%20our%20heretics%20the%20first%20in%20history%20who%20deserve%20to%20be%20burned%3F%0AWe%20don%u2019t%20think%20so.%0AWe%20believe%20dissent%20is%20essential%20to%20the%20progressive%20march%20of%20human%20civilization.%20We%20believe%20there%u2019s%20more%20in%20science%2C%20technology%2C%20and%20business%20to%20discover%2C%20that%20it%20must%20be%20discovered%2C%20and%20that%20in%20order%20to%20make%20such%20discovery%20we%20must%20learn%20to%20engage%20with%20new%20%u2014%20if%20even%20sometimes%20frightening%20%u2014%20ideas.%20So%3A%0A
