DealBook Summit - The New York Times Events

DealBook Summit - The New York Times Events Ashley Judd Actor, Author and Humanitarian Ashley Judd is an actor, author, survivor leader and global feminist humanitarian. She has worked with N.G.O.s, grassroots organizations and governments since 2004, advocating for justice, equality, healing and the rights of the marginalized. Judd was named one of Time’s “Persons of the Year” for her role as a silence-breaker and changemaker in the #MeToo movement. She earned an M.P.A. from Harvard’s Kennedy School in 2010, where her paper, “Gender Violence: Law and Social Justice,” was awarded the Dean’s Scholar award from Harvard Law School. Judd’s commitment to justice was shaped early on. In Kentucky in 1986, she learned from Barbara — the Black cook at her all-white sorority house — who illuminated the intersecting oppressions of race, class, sex and gender. She was also profoundly influenced by lesbian theologians, as well as her anthropology and gender studies professors, who modeled that both rigorous thinking and deep caring are essential to liberation. Since her acting debut in 1993, Judd has combined her art with advocacy, working to embody a vision of womanist, feminist and humanist liberation.
