Kellyanne Conway on CNN: “I’m a victim of sexual assault,” she tells Jake Tapper - The Washington Post

Kellyanne Conway on CNN: “I’m a victim of sexual assault,” she tells Jake Tapper - The Washington Post : “How could she work for Donald Trump? I work for President Trump because he’s so good to the women who work for him,” she said. “So, I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear it from any of them.”

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System Satoshi Nakamoto satoshin@gmx.com www.bitcoin.org Abstract.  A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benefits are lost if a trusted third party is still required to prevent double-spending. We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network. The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work. The longest chain not only serves as proof of the sequence of events witnessed, but proof that it came from the largest pool of CPU power. As long as a majority of CPU power is controlled by nodes that are not cooperating to attack the network, they'll generate the longest chain and outpace attackers. T...

Elon Musk vs. the SEC: The Tesla billionaire gears up for the fight of his career - The Washington Post

Elon Musk vs. the SEC: The Tesla billionaire gears up for the fight of his career - The Washington Post He has fought back viciously by calling his opponents names like “saboteur,” “idiot” and “pedophile.” Now, Tesla chief Elon Musk is embracing the same kind of combative approach to wage the fight of his career against the Securities and Exchange Commission. The coming legal clash will pit the volatile billionaire against a team of federal regulators, who say he manipulated markets and fraudulently misled investors by claiming in a series of tweets that he had secured the funding to take Tesla private. If the agency wins, it will seek to ban him from serving as an executive of any public company, including the electric automaker he has devoted his life to for 15 years. Musk could have compromised earlier this week when the SEC offered to not press charges if he temporarily stepped down as chairman, people familiar with the matter said. But in a characteristically risky gamble, Musk ...

A Mess of Thoughts on Jokes and Freedom and Context - Cosmic Shambles

A Mess of Thoughts on Jokes and Freedom and Context - Cosmic Shambles : When I first saw the abbreviated news story of Mark Meechan and his “sieg heil” pug, he sounded like a toy Nazi idiot. Then, I watched it all and I saw that it was meant to be silliness that teeters into grotesquerie by crossing over into taboo, like an excessive outtake from Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Then, with legal action, the murk was stirred and everything became muddier and Meechan became a vessel for those with an agenda to sail. The problem became context. You are removing the context of a wind up directed at your girlfriend at the moment of making it public. You are removing your friends’ knowledge that you are a decent liberal guy. You are now someone sat opposite a dog saying “gas the Jews” for a laugh. To this new audience, you may no longer be the man you know you are. You are in an arena filled with anti-semitic abuse and heavy with holocaust denial. I do not believe this was intended as hate...

Brett Kavanaugh's Tears, Decoded by a Body Language Expert

Brett Kavanaugh's Tears, Decoded by a Body Language Expert : "He said at one point he didn't do anything of a 'sexual nature' to Dr. Ford," notes Wood. "Was he redefining some action he took as 'non-sexual' and was he saying he didn't do anything to the adult Dr. Ford because when she was the 15 she had a different last name? One of the reasons I think this is relevant is that he is known for judging by the 'letter' of the law," she added, referring to the fact that he could argue a technicality should he be accused of perjuring himself. "The other reason is that I have seen this technique used so often by liars."

Mac Rumors: Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About

Mac Rumors: Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About : As far as FCC approval is concerned, it is a routine step before the launch of any new iPhone. However, Apple usually waits until the last minute to receive approval from the necessary regulatory agencies, whereas the iPhone XR has been somewhat surprisingly approved nearly a month ahead of sale.

Dianne Feinstein Is In Trouble Thanks To Kevin De Leon

Dianne Feinstein Is In Trouble Thanks To Kevin De Leon : At 85, California Democrat Dianne Feinstein is the country’s oldest senator. To the disappointment of some on the left, she decided not to retire this year, saying she wants to keep the Senate seat she has held since 1992. With 26 years of wins under her belt, most people expected the election to be more a formality than a campaign; Republicans didn’t even bother running a real candidate against her in the primary. Thanks to that, and California’s “jungle primary system”—by which the top two vote-getters regardless of party advance to the general ballot—Feinstein is now facing a formidable challenge in Kevin de Len, a 51-year-old Democrat to her left, who, despite lacking her name recognition or war chest, has been erodingherconsiderablelead in the polls. Thanks to spending the last decade in state politics, most recently serving as president of the California Senate, de Len even managed to seize the California Democratic ...

Facebook admits using your 2FA phone number for ad targeting | 9to5Mac

Facebook admits using your 2FA phone number for ad targeting | 9to5Mac : But the claim reported byGizmodo is that Facebook will do this even if the mobile number was provided only for use with two-factor authentication to login to Facebook. It is this claim which Facebook now (somewhat indirectly) admitted toTechCrunch. We asked Facebook to confirm this is indeed what it’s doing — to make doubly doubly sure. Because, srsly wtaf. And it sent us a statement confirming that it repurposes digits handed to it by people wanting to secure their accounts to target them with marketing. Here’s the statement, attributed to a Facebook spokesperson: “We use the information people provide to offer a better, more personalized experience on Facebook, including ads. We are clear about how we use the information we collect, including the contact information that people upload or add to their own accounts. You can manage and delete the contact information you’ve uploaded at any time.” A spokesman...

Netflix Looks to Partnerships for Growth; ‘No Plans’ for Live Sport – Variety

Netflix Looks to Partnerships for Growth; ‘No Plans’ for Live Sport – Variety : Maria Ferreras, the streaming giant’s vice president of business development EMEA, said Friday. Speaking in front of an industry audience at the IBC Conference in Amsterdam in an interview focused on looking at the next chapter in Netflix’s growth story, Ferreras also sought to reassure broadcast partners that Netflix was not intending to discontinue partnerships which see it take global rights outside of a production’s territory of origin. Netflix has partnered with local broadcasters in numerous markets, such as with Channel 4 on dark comedy “The End of the F***ing World,” which see productions play in their home market via broadcast partners and everywhere else on Netflix. However, many U.K. producers have recently voiced concerns that Netflix planned to stop this type of partnership as it got increasingly into local production. “I don’t see any signs of that,” said Ferreras. “We can definitely com...

F1 TV Audience Reverses By 40 Million Under New Measurement System

F1 TV Audience Reverses By 40 Million Under New Measurement System : Formula One's television audience has reversed by 40 million following a spectacular U-Turn in the way it measures the number of viewers watching its races. Official figures released by F1 last year revealed that it had 390 million viewers in 2016 but a press release distributed by the series yesterday claimed that it was actually far lower. Instead of saying that F1 had 390 million viewers in 2016 the press release claimed that there were at most 352.3 million and “there was not a decrease in this specific number” the following year. In summary, although F1 said last year that it had 390 million viewers in 2016 it has now reduced this figure by at least 40 million. As this revised figure isn’t higher than the one for 2017 F1 can claim that there hasn’t been a year-on-year drop in its audience. This sounds positive but the revised audience figure may well send shivers down the spines of F1 team bosses. That ...

ECA Social Contract

ECA Social Contract Toward a New Social Contract: Taking on Distributional Tensions in Europe and Central Asia Download PDF  |  Press Release  |  Overview   Rising inequality is among the most serious problems of our times. Economic progress has been remarkable in the last few decades, but not everyone has enjoyed the same gains, or even the same opportunities. The aggregate indicators, such as GDP growth or employment rate, paint a positive picture. However, a different picture comes into focus when one goes beyond the aggregates. Technological change, globalization, and policy reforms have influenced industries, regions, and ultimately people in very different ways. Entire sectors have lost importance and many occupations are under threat of disappearing. In many countries, the labor share of total income has been declining, and given the accumulation of capital wealth in the hands of a minority, incomes are concentrating at the top of the distribution. The...

Invisible Swarms of Particles Envelop Us All. Come Have a Look | WIRED

Invisible Swarms of Particles Envelop Us All. Come Have a Look | WIRED : The researchers also analyzed the makeup of individual exposomes. They found them to vary considerably between test subjects, including those who live and work within a relatively small geographic region like the San Francisco Bay Area. In the course of a month, exposometers collected from test subjects living in Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Redwood City and San Francisco revealed very distinct exposure patterns. The exposome profile of the San Francisco resident, for example, turned up higher rates of so-called sludge bacteria. Sludge as in sewer water, or feces-of-unknown-origin on a sidewalk south of Market Street. The test subjects' exposomes also hinted at how certain particulates might affect human health. For years, Snyder suffered from allergies in the early spring, which he assumed were associated with pine pollen. Yet his exposome signature suggests his symptoms correlate more strongly with eucalyptus. Si...

Pharma 2020: Virtual R&D - Which path will you take?

Pharma 2020: Virtual R&D - Which path will you take? : Pharma 2020: Virtual R&D, the pharmaceutical industry is at a pivotal point in its evolution, particularly in relation to research and development. The patent on many of the medicines launched in the 1990s will expire over the next few years, leaving many companies very exposed; only four out of ten companies have enough products in their pipelines to fill the impending revenue gap.Pharma 2020: Virtual R&D - Which path will you take?, the second paper in the PwC Pharma 2020 series, explores how pharma companies could dramatically improve the R&D productivity. It contends that by 2020 the R&D process may be shortened by two-thirds, success rates may dramatically increase, and clinical trial costs could be cut substantially. New computer based technologies will create a greater understanding of the biology of disease and the evolution of "Virtual man"; to enable researchers to predict the effects of new...

Amazon may have patented the next big thing in online shopping — Quartz

Amazon may have patented the next big thing in online shopping — Quartz : There’s potentially another reason for Amazon to promote the use of video in e-commerce. It now has a way tooffer customers discounts for watching ads. In October, Amazon was awarded a patent for “content-based price reductions and incentives.” The patent says that “customers in an electronic environment can be presented with the option to receive advertising, such as audio, video, or interactive content, in order to receive discounted pricing or similar benefits.” One example of how Amazon sees this working is that a customer can watch a video ad on an item’s detail page, such as a product review. As the customer watches more of the ad, the displayed price for the item drops.

Remembering the past won’t save us from the future | The Outline

Remembering the past won’t save us from the future | The Outline : Even if we “understand” history in this way, then what? The alternative is not so much a positive future as just not the same bad past as we think we know it. It invites delusion, as though we can replay history like loading a video game from a save point and trying again, now that some of us, at least, have the walkthrough. Moreover, the proverb implies paradoxically both that history will keep operating without human intervention (the notion that “history repeats itself”) and that, Sideshow Bob-like, humans seem to keep stepping on the same rakes: all of our bad pasts seem to have kept happening regardless of what we did; maybe we’re just a bad species. We’re all equally to blame for the past, but also powerless to really make a better future. It appears clearer by the day that such thinking is suicidal, on a planetary scale. We face something truly unprecedented — the certainty of human-made climate change and the p...
