iTunes manages, stores and plays all your photos, music and videos for free. Since there is a wealth of file formats out there, to be able to play more of them additional codecs will need to be downloaded to your mac. Codecs will make your mac able to recognize and play more of files that can be found on Internet and Windows PC system.

Bits and pieces of software you need in order to play 99.99 types of media files -- music (mp3 mp4) and video (divx, avi, xvid, mov, wmv).

Quicktime will play most of the open source file types like mp3, mp4, DV, HDV video andopen and preview practically every graphic/photo file known to man. For proffesional version which will give you access to advanced editing options of QT you will need to upgrade, however this is in most of the cases not necessary.

Windows Media Video is played by Flip4Mac plug-in. It is free todownload from here or you can upgrade to Pro version for 29$.

DIVX is a proprietary video codec and can be downloaded for free. It will allow your mac to play divix files in iTunes. Free download or Pro version for 20$.

MPlayer is open source and free to download and it plays all typically Windows based video file formats.
