Mobile TV Broadcast Subscribers to Leap to 100 Million by 2010

Mobile TV Broadcast Subscribers to Leap to 100 Million by 2010 : "" (Via .) SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 21, 2006 - By the end of 2010, mobile TV broadcast subscribers worldwide will reach 102 million, a giant leap from 3.4 million in 2006, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). Recognizing that using cellular networks to deliver content that millions want to watch simultaneously requires much greater bandwidth than is currently available, carriers are turning to mobile TV broadcast networks, which have a much lower cost per bit for video delivery, the high-tech market research firm says. “The greatest challenge for mobile TV broadcast operators is to acquire the spectrum necessary to offer services,” says Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. “Spectrum availability may determine which of four standards is chosen, and also impacts the business case for the deployment of a network.” Recent research by In-Stat found the following: There are positives and negatives to each standard, ...

ZDF: HBS Has Fixed Controversial World Cup Long Shots Soccer - 23 June 2006 Complaints about a surfeit of panoramic shots during coverage of soccer’s World Cup have been addressed, according to ZDF, the German public-service broadcaster that is among those providing coverage of the tournament. ZDF told Reuters that it had raised the issue with HBS, the World Cup host broadcaster owned by the Switzerland-based sports agency Infront Sports and Media and that, as a result, ‘The situation has improved and the number of complaints has fallen significantly. It’s no longer a serious issue.’ ZDF said that there were now more close-up shots during the coverage, but pointed out that the panoramic shots look good on high-definition televisions. HBS denied that the panoramic shots were intended to please sponsors, whose advertising boards can be seen more clearly in such shots. Sportcal.com

Madness of Crowds - Forbes.com

Madness of Crowds - Forbes.com : "" (Via .) An old article but useful. The world's most popular professional sport is a study in financial contrasts and often desperation. Stockport County Football Club is almost literally in the shadow of Manchester United, the world's wealthiest sports franchise. Situated just a few miles down the road from Old Trafford, Man U.'s legendary arena, the soccer club attracts a mere 6,500 people on its best day, pulling in just $8.5 million in sales a year. But thousands of miles away, in Chinese cities like Shenyang, Wuhan and Beijing, the tiny 121-year-old Stockport club is the hottest thing going. There a team that has long struggled on the English playing field draws 25,000 people to matches. This May Stockport will be the first professional soccer outfit to play in Urumqi, Xinjiang province, the city said to be farthest in the world from a sea. "People will travel for four days to watch us in China," says Steve D. Bell...

EU regulation of internet =?ISO-8859-1?B?jA==?=will drive out jobs=?ISO-8859-1?B?uQ==?=

By John Willman in London Published: May 30 2006 22:00 | Last updated: May 30 2006 22:00 A bid to regulate audio-visual content on the internet in the same way as in television broadcasts will drive jobs out of the European Union, businesses from seven member states will warn on Wednesday Business federations say changes proposed by the European Commission to the Television Without Frontiers directive will stifle the development of digital content and services across the EU by applying rules designed for traditional broadcasters to all online audio-visual content. Ahead of a European parliament meeting on Thursday to discuss the draft legislation, the business federations will argue that attempting to regulate online content could force media companies to move their internet operations outside the EU. New regulation would be particularly damaging to the small and medium-size companies that are among the most innovative in the new media. http://news.ft.com/cms/s/f3ab22f8-f005-11...

Net advertising 'to overtake national newspapers'

· Classifieds lead migration in search for 'reach' · Tabloids hit hardest but all papers will suffer Dan Milmo, media business editor Wednesday May 31, 2006 The Guardian The internet will overtake national newspapers in the battle for advertising spending in the UK by the end of the year, it was predicted yesterday. GroupM, which accounts for about 30% of global media buying, says in a report to be published next month that the internet will account for 13.3% of the £12.2bn UK advertising market this year, overtaking national newspapers with a share of 13.2%. The figure for web advertising could be even bigger, because the report excludes the estimated £1bn a year spent on "affiliate advertising", which largely comprises adverts placed on smaller websites. The speed at which advertisers have shifted spending to the web has surprised many. Six years ago the web was an upstart medium controlling only 1% of the multibillion-pound British adve...

The Internet Can Do Everything... But We Can't The Internet Can Do Everything... But We Can't

When it comes to ad targeting potential: placing specifically the right message or offer in front of the right person at the right time, the Internet is the medium of choice. Matching ads to the correct audience is important because relevant ads are proven to be the ones most likely to be noticed, understood, and responded to and the ones least likely to annoy. The Internet has a couple of special advantages in this area, particularly the potential to provide rich data on how users interact with content, advertising, and the dynamic nature of the medium itself. These properties allow advertising to be targeted based on audience demographic characteristics, dayparts or days of week, geography, context, user permission, segmented user behavior, and so on. But, this strength is also a weakness. The wisest media client I know summed it up this way: "David, the Internet can do everything... but we can't." http://www.clickz.com/experts/media/behavioral_marketing/article.php/360...

Today, it is Warner Bros., which is not only selling its movies, but also TV shows, including ‘Babylon 5″ and ‘Dukes of Hazzard.’ To avoid conflicts with networks, CinemaNow is expected to only sell TV shows that are no longer being produced. @ D: Gates Reality Distortion on Reality Acquisition; We Call It LBS

@ D: Gates Reality Distortion on Reality Acquisition; We Call It LBS : "At the conference opening yesterday, Bill Gates talked about ‘ reality acquisition device ’ (in relation to mobiles) and that got picked up on a bunch of blogs and other places as a new buzzword. So I’ll do the buzzkill for y’all: He described it where you’ll be able to see an image, for example, and get ‘augmented reality views of a thing on a portable device,’ such as going to a baseball game and seeing replays and getting extra information on the screen. Maybe it is another MSFT attempt to coing something different…or maybe Gates just made it up on the spot. Anyway, that’s settled… "

Yahoo Launches Video Sharing; Becomes Like 50 Other Sites

Yahoo Launches Video Sharing; Becomes Like 50 Other Sites : "Yahoo has retooled its still-anemic efforts in video, and have launched a uploading/sharing service , a la YouTube, Grouper, Veoh, MySpace Video, AOL UnCut, Google Video, and countless others in the mix. I guess they decided no point buying any one of these worthless sites (I’m extrapolating for effect), or even enables something similar within Flickr (messing with the present mix probably makes some sense in the short term) and hack one together on their own. Because of copyright and adult fears, Yahoo editors will screen all the clips that are featured on the service’s front page. One thing Yahoo is doing slightly differently: it is aggregating videos from other sites as well, such as iFilm, PlanetVids, Grouper etc. FT/MarketWatch : The company said it would stand out from its competitors in also being able to offer content created by its internal media group and direct feeds from partners such as Walt Disney, HBO, Via...
