The $6.5m canyon: it's the most expensive photograph ever – but it's like a hackneyed poster in a posh hotel | Art and design | The Guardian : Photography is not an art. It is a technology. We have no excuse to ignore this obvious fact in the age of digital cameras, when the most beguiling high-definition images and effects are available to millions. My iPad can take panoramic views that are gorgeous to look at. Does that make me an artist? No, it just makes my tablet one hell of a device.

Clay Christensen On Disruption Theory, Apple - Business Insider

Clay Christensen On Disruption Theory, Apple - Business Insider : Clay Christensen: Yes. Everybody else thinks that it's absolutely crazy. But I think I'll be right. I have made an observation that relates to this. It is as follows: Many of society's most important and vexing problems were created by unnamed people in the past who decided unilaterally to combine things that should be separate and to separatethings that should be together.

An explosion of 'event series' on TV

An explosion of 'event series' on TV : Just a few years ago, both projects would have been classified as miniseries. But the format has been rebranded. Now these two and many of TV's most ambitious upcoming projects are tagged "event series." What is that, you may ask? Event series are close-ended stories generally told over 10 installments or less. They're big-ticket packages that channels can heavily promote. "We use the 'event' label to make people take notice," says Robert Greenblatt, NBC entertainment chairman. " 'Miniseries' doesn't register with people. It's archaic. We want to make things feel bigger." NBC is currently running The Slap, a sophisticated eight-part limited series with a prestige ensemble that includes Peter Sarsgaard, Uma Thurman, Zachary Quinto, Brian Cox, and Thandie Newton. That's part of the appeal of event series. They can attract more distinguished casts because they don'

bcg.perspectives - Greasing the Wheels of the Internet Economy

bcg.perspectives - Greasing the Wheels of the Internet Economy We define e-friction as the factors that can inhibit consumers, businesses, and others from fully participating in the national—and the international—Internet economy. The BCG e-Friction Index assesses 55 indicators of friction that inhibit Internet use. We have grouped them into four components: infrastructure-related friction that limits basic access; industry sources and individual sources that affect the ability of companies and consumers to engage in online transactions; and information-related friction that involves the availability of, and access to, online content. (See Exhibit 1.) No economy is entirely frictionless, of course, and sources of friction evolve over time, but a hypothetical country that comes out on top on all 55 friction indicators in our index today would score 0; one that ranks last across the board would score 100. We scored actual countries against these baselines. With an e-friction score of 1

What Should the New MAU Be? | Re/code

What Should the New MAU Be? | Re/code : he simple explanation: The bulk of these four million people were not actually using Twitter. They were counted as part of a feature in the iPhone’s Safari Web browser that automatically pulled Twitter data whether the user was reading it or not. After the iOS 8 update, that automatic data collection was halted, and the people who were originally counted as “active” disappeared from the pot.

Google executives explain why the MBA approach to building things is 'stupid' | VentureBeat | Business | by Gregory Ferenstein : The point, as both Rosenberg and Eric Schmidt learned, was that Google prefers to design for the unexpected and work with engineers in an iterative fashion. If managers don’t leave room for the unplanned, they can never be pleasantly surprised.

UEFA and the European Union: From Confrontation to Co-operation?

UEFA and the European Union: From Confrontation to Co ... This article investigates the relationship between UEFA, as European football’s governing body, and the EU. It assesses the evolution of UEFA as a football governing body since the Bosman ruling (1995) until current initiatives such as the rules on locally-trained players (2005-2006). The paper traces the evolution of UEFA’s reactions to the increasing involvement of EU institutions in football matters, with special focus on the regulation of the players’ market. It is argued that UEFA’s attitude towards the EU has changed in the last ten years. Whilst the EU was seen as a threat for UEFA in 1995, it is now considered a ‘long term strategic partner’. Two main reasons can be identified for UEFA’s evolution. First and foremost, UEFA has been forced to accept the primacy of European law and its application to the activities of football organisations. UEFA has had no option but to adapt to the

Probe of Hollywood-Euro Pay TV contracts: What happens next? • The Register : Here at Faultline we’re not so high-minded as to agree with the EU on that score and think that promoting competition within a given country is more important right now. We think that local providers would proliferate if they had access to content, and that the inflection point of Over The Top video delivery is an ideal moment in the industry for this to happen.
