Al Jazeera America to Shut Down by April - The New York Times

Al Jazeera America to Shut Down by April - The New York Times : Current TV, before being bought by Al Jazeera, had struggled for years to find an audience, and to define its place in the news landscape. Fusion, a cable news network and digital publication aimed at younger audiences, lost the backing of one of its corporate parent companies, Disney, in recent weeks, following reports that it, too, had struggled to find its footing with audiences. Even established players like MSNBC have been forced to revamp in recent years. Cable news “is a very well-served market, not to say saturated, and you have three powerful, well-established players,” he said, referring to Fox News, MSNBC and CNN. “Endemically, it’s n

A CEO reveals how to hire - Business Insider : Be wary of seductive Tellers. They tend to be good interviewers. Interviewing ability has almost no correlation to employee effectiveness. The most common hiring mistake is hiring good interviewers. Don't make that mistake — hire Doers, not Tellers.

Meet Scott Breitenstein, owner of ComplaintsBureau.com | Fusion

Meet Scott Breitenstein, owner of ComplaintsBureau.com | Fusion : For Breitenstein, maintaining a hard rule on removals is part of a years-long mission to expose cheaters and scammers. This quest, though, has real, grave consequences for people—consequences I’m not entirely sure Breitenstein fully understands. While talking in his office, he told me about a young woman whose nude photos were leaked to ComplaintsBureau by her ex-boyfriend. The woman, Breitenstein said, had attempted to get the post taken down. But ComplaintsBureau’s contact form was broken, and he never received the messages. The embarrassment over her revenge porn caused the woman to spiral into a depression, and she ultimately committed suicide.

Kevin Lynch says Steve Jobs tried recruiting him to Apple after Flash debate | 9to5Mac

Kevin Lynch says Steve Jobs tried recruiting him to Apple after Flash debate | 9to5Mac : While it hasn’t been widely discussed that Jobs had tried (and failed) to recruit the Adobe CTO in 2010, Lynch confirmed the detail in a recent commencement address delivered toUniversity of Illinois at Chicago’s mid-year graduating class: I’ve been through a number of challenging situations. One of these was getting into a disagreement several years ago with Steve before I was with Apple — it was not easy and I didn’t win the argument, but something surprising happened. Steve got to know me better and asked me to work with him. I felt I couldn’t join at the time, but he left the door open. Later, he tragically passed away. I couldn’t stop thinking of our conversations and am so happy I did join Apple, and have been giving my all since. I did this with a leap of faith, not knowing exactly what we would build, but that I’d be working with the truly amazing team at Apple. My first day I learned

Gadget tech explained: AMOLED vs. IPS displays

Gadget tech explained: AMOLED vs. IPS displays : As well as Apple, LG is a big fan of the IPS LCD approach, and so is HTC. These displays can usually perform better in terms of their visibility in bright sunlight even if they're not quite as good for watching movies in a darkened room (as you can see, it's a tough call to pick one over the other).

Stocks could crash by at least 50% - Business Insider : None of this means for sure that the market will crash or that you should sell stocks. (I own stocks, and I'm not selling them.) It does mean, however, that you should be mentally prepared for the possibility of a major pullback and lousy long-term returns.

The Positive Social and Self Concept Consequences of Sports Team Identification

The Positive Social and Self Concept Consequences of Sports Team Identification : As a result of increased geographic mobility, industrialization, and the like, traditional social and community ties have declined. Conversely, sports spectatorship has continued to flourish. We argue that strong identification with a specific sports team provides a buffer from feelings of depression and alienation, and at the same time, fosters feelings of belongingness and self worth. In effect, sports team identification replaces more traditional family and community-based attachments to the larger social structure. Three studies find support for these notions, using basketball and baseball fans. The relationship between degree of team identification and team success was also examined; it was only significant for individuals who identify with teams geographically removed from themselves. Discussion focuses on the positive implications of sports team identification for self-esteem maintenance and the so

The Most Important Design Jobs Of The Future

The Most Important Design Jobs Of The Future : The CDO or CCO will be a job in every company, overseeing the design of a business's every touchpoint and solidifying a fluid visual narrative that can maximize efficiency and purpose. Design is more and more central to the success of the modern business; designers are no longer being brought in at the end of the process to make things look pretty, but rather are providing essential insights from the ground up. In the future, I see a role on every executive team for a designer—someone whose role it is to ensure that every element of the business is designed well, and designed holistically.

Augmented Reality Mirror at CES 2016 Takes All the Guesswork Out of Beauty

Augmented Reality Mirror at CES 2016 Takes All the Guesswork Out of Beauty The ModiFace Mirror HD will provide people with the ability to try out different looks. This will help people make smarter make-up choices by allowing them to try out new colors, which can be particularly useful for people of color, for whom buying the right shade can require a lot of guess work. Brands are already signed up to have their products to take part in the augmented reality mirror, including L’Oreal, Allergan, and Jane Iredale. The mirror allows users to change not only their makeup but also whiten their teeth, change their eyebrows, reverse the signs of aging, and change eye color. When we launched our original mirror

Film vs. digital: the most contentious debate in the film world, explained - Vox

Film vs. digital: the most contentious debate in the film world, explained - Vox "If I can't shoot on film I'll stop making movies," Tarantino  said  on Los Angeles radio station KCRW's show  The Treatment . He added, "If we're acquiescing to digital projection, we've already ceded too much ground to the barbarians. The fight is lost if all we have is digital, DCP presentations. To me, that's just television in public." Just what is Tarantino talking about here? When someone pushes his glasses high up on his nose, raises a finger, and creaks, "Actually,  film  is…" chances are he’s about to explain the difference between analog and digital   filmmaking. Once upon a time, all movies were shot using machines that would take 24 photographs or "frames" every second and instantaneously leave a negative of those images on a filmstrip. It would then be treated with chemicals and displayed for showings by running the reels cont

SAP helped Germany thrash Brazil 7-1 in World Cup - Times of India

SAP helped Germany thrash Brazil 7-1 in World Cup - Times of India : How do you say Hana helped Germany win the World Cup? Hana analytics helped map other teams and their styles of play over the previous two years. Before each game, every German player looked at the player he was playing against — what they had tactically done on the playground, their patterns of behaviour. I connected with the then German captain Philipp Lahm later and told him we were all scared to death when the Brazilians attacked us hard for the first ten minutes (the game in which Germany went on to thrash Brazil 7-1). Lahm said they were totally relaxed. He said, "We knew this was exactly what they would do in the first ten minutes, so we were prepared. Secondly, we had analysed the problems of their defence line, we knew our left and right wingers were very strong, and we knew that if we played forward really fast with a long kick from our goalie, this would be a big win." I said you are kidding, and
