How deep is the online-ad well? | CNET News.com

The memory still makes some in the financial community cringe. During the dot-com boom, more than a few Internet start-ups planned to support free Internet services--and theoretically turn a profit--by selling online advertisements Needless to say, for many it didn't work. Now a new group of companies, ranging from tech giants to the tiniest of Silicon Alley start-ups, are banking on ad sales to support new Net services. Microsoft, for one, is pushing full-on into advertising with its Windows Live platform, which will offer Internet-based services like e-mail, blogging and instant messaging that are supported by ads and some subscriptions. Sounds like the bad old days? Not at all, say industry experts. With new ad-tracking technologies and proven ad buyers like Procter & Gamble and Ford Motor leading the way, analysts believe there's a maturity and reliability to this ad boom that was sorely missing during the Internet bubble. Napster.com Could Bring In $50 Million Annual Ad Rev

Napster.com Could Bring In $50 Million Annual Ad Rev : "Too soon for meaningful results but analysts are applauding subscription services Napster and Rhapsody for adding advertising revenue to the mix; so are labels and publishers, who get a cut. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks napster.com alone could bring in $50 million annually from advertising, according to Billboard. The lure of that advertising revenue changed Napster’s plans to rely on subscription alone; as CEO Chris Gorog explains, ‘… This was an effective piece of real estate we weren’t using to any scale.’ In addition to the ad revenue, which varies with usage, labels and publishers stand to gain from users’ repeated, but limited, exposure to their music. @We Media: Ads On The BBC Are Nothing New : "‘We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t,’ said Richard Sambrook, BBC’s director of global news , on the proposals to introduce adverts to BBC.co.uk for non-UK users. Overseas users now represent between 30 and 50 per cent of traffic to BBC.co.uk but it is funded by a licence fee paid by the British public. Sambrook told paidContent: ‘If we do it on a public service basis they say we’re taking all the traffic and distorting the market, and they would prefer us to compete on a commercial basis, but if we want to compete on a commercial basis they say we are taking ads away from them.’ Overseas users would be identified by their IP address (a system that the BBC says is 99.9 per cent reliable) and routed through to a payment page. Most of the cost for the BBC is in streaming video, although overseas users already get a lower resolution ‘flick book’ version of video clips. PARIS Describing the act as "courageous" and "forward thinking," the French minister of culture said the government would press ahead with a law that would effectively outlaw Apple's popular iTunes online music system. All music and videos purchased from the iTunes Web site, which can currently only be played using Apple's own iTunes software and iPod devices, must be playable by other devices and software programs, the minister, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, said during an interview Thursday. The law seeks to establish the principle of interoperability, meaning that all digital music or video purchased online should be not be limited to one manufacturer's device. Wired News: Soderbergh: Burn, Hollywood, Burn

NEW YORK -- Hollywood's in trouble. That seems to be the consensus of filmmakers and filmgoers at the Tribeca Film Festival. "The economic model of the film business is broken," said Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh during a panel discussion Monday night entitled "Downloading at a Theater Near You." Soderbergh cited a litany of Hollywood problems: the obscene compensation of A-list talent (top stars routinely receive packages worth $25 million) and a revenue-sharing system that he described as unfair to theaters. But Soderbergh also expressed hope that digital formats and innovative release strategies will soon revolutionize the way we watch movies, whether Hollywood likes it or not. He and another panelist, movie mogul Todd Wagner, proposed several cures: a salary cap for actors, a closing of the "windows" between when a film plays in theaters and when it is released on other platforms, simplification of budgets and contracts, increased incent

@ We Media: Trust, In Statistics

@ We Media: Trust, In Statistics : " We’re in studio one at BBC Television Centre at there’s a great buzz. First off, Jeremy Vine opened with some statistics on trust: some of these we’ve heard before but this theme is critical to the concept of ‘we media’ - is there really so much mistrust of mainstream media sources, and has that contributed to the popularity of blogs? Twenty-eight per cent of those surveyed stopped using a media source because it lost their trust. Blogs were trusted more than the government in Nigeria and Egypt; the government is trusted more as a source in the US and the UK. (We’re watching Jeremy presenting these stats as Peter Snow-style virtual columns in a real newsroom: ‘If I look as if I’m groping for these numbers, it’s because they’re not really here,’ he quips.) The standout fact here was on age groups and the media sources they trust the most. TV and newspapers are trusted more than the web in every age group apart from 18-24 year-olds, and that’s th

FT.com / Technology - Networks push online package for TV ads

Networks push online package for TV ads By Aline van Duyn in New York and Gary Silverman in London Published: April 30 2006 22:06 | Last updated: April 30 2006 22:06 US television broadcasters and cable networks are for the first time pitching for millions of advertising dollars by highlighting their ability to reach internet and on-demand audiences alongside traditional viewers. Media buyers said they had noticed the trend during annual negotiations over US television time. Donna Speciale, president at Mediavest, a large ad-buying agency, said: “What is new is that the networks are really focusing on digital. Some of the presentations are even starting with the digital component. That has never happened before.” This kind of negotiation is expected to become more common this year, reflecting changes in media consumption. Although television viewing still takes up more time than other activities, the ability to fast-forward through commercials and watch programming at any time has led

From NAB: Illustrating The CBS Online O&O Push

From NAB: Illustrating The CBS Online O&O Push : "Last week, I mentioned looking for a link to a striking promo video from CBS4.com aired at NAB. The video shows tech reporter Dave Malkoff explaining the various ways CBS4 is ‘Always ON.’ It also illustrates the company-wide push into digital by CBS and the efforts to move it to the most local levels. Chris Krewson, the mutimedia editor for the Morning Call, found the link so he could share it around his newsroom. Actually, Krewson’s very attendance at RTNDA @ NAB stands out; he was there to better learn how to program a news site for today. I think we agree with the increased emphasis on video, any paper serious about its online operations should consider following suit. Text, audio, video — no news outlet can afford to focus on just one of the three anymore. CBS has figured that out. FT.com / By industry / Media & internet - Apple sets tune for pricing of song downloads

Apple sets tune for pricing of song downloads Apple Computer on Monday revealed it had renewed contracts with the four largest record companies to sell songs through its iTunes digital store at 99 cents each. The agreements came after months of bargaining, and were a defeat for music companies that had been pushing for a variable pricing model. ADVERTISEMENT The music industry’s big four - Universal, Warner Music, EMI and Sony BMG – were not immediately available to comment. Since iTunes’ launch three years ago, Apple has charged US consumers 99 cents for each track – a uniform price that Steve Jobs, its chief executive, favours because of its simplicity for consumers. Edgar Bronfman, Warner’s chief executive, and senior executives at EMI and Sony have in recent months supported variable pricing, which would allow them to charge more for new material from top artists. Universal has taken a more modest approach, suggesting that the market should be allowed to develop further before any
