First Commercial 3G UMTS DVB-H Handset

Europe Rome : LG Electronics announced the launch of the LG-U900, the world’s first commercially available UMTS (WCDMA) DVB-H phone, at a ceremony in Rome, Italy. The LG-U900 will be available early May through Hutchison, a leading global telecommunications services provider, in time for the 2006 World Cup. Hutchison Italy, the country’s largest 3G telecommunications provider, has exclusive DVB-H broadcasting rights for the 2006 World Cup. The company will provide video footage of all World Cup matches beginning June 6, through the Hutchison’s service channels, ‘La3’. MySpace Rules the Web

By Enid Burns | July 11, 2006 NewsCorp-owned MySpace garners the highest U.S. market share of visits on the Web, even beating out Yahoo Mail and portals. That's according to data released by Hitwise. For the week ending July 8, MySpace had 4.46 percent market share of visits, making it the top site on the Internet. The social networking site surpassed widely-used Web-based e-mail and portal sites including Yahoo Mail (4.42 percent); Yahoo (4.25 percent); Google (3.89 percent) and MySpace's own e-mail site (2.85 percent). eBay ranks eighth on the list with 1.59 percent market share. Report: Downloading Podcasts More Popular Than Blogging

By Kevin Newcomb | July 12, 2006 More people have downloaded a podcast lately than have published a blog or engage in online dating, according to a new study by Nielsen//NetRatings. The study, based on data from its @Plan Summer 2006 release, found that 6.6 percent of the U.S. adult online population, or 9.2 million Web users, have downloaded an audio podcast in the past 30 days. It also found that 4.0 percent, or 5.6 million Web users, have recently downloaded a video podcast. By comparison, Nielsen//NetRatings' data shows that 4.8 percent of the U.S. adult online population publish blogs, and 3.9 percent engage in online dating. Those activities still lag far behind online job hunting, at 24.6 percent, and paying bills online, at 51.6 percent. Podcast listeners skew younger, with Web users between the ages 18 and 24 nearly twice as likely as the average Web user to download audio podcasts, followed by users in the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups. Slow Adoption for Mobile Video

Half the subscribers to mobile video services don't watch video according to "How People Use Mobile Video," a study released by Knowledge Networks. Instead, the laptop emerges as the most-used device on which to watch mobile video. Mobile video available through cell phone subscriptions and other mobile devices such as the iPod have fewer active users than the installed base. Fifty percent of subscribers to cell phone services like Verizon's VCast don't access the video content. Thirty percent of iPod Video owners use the device for uses other than video. "The video is a nice addition [to a mobile subscription], people like having the most technically advanced cell phone," said Dave Tice, VP of client service at Knowledge Networks. "They may be signing up for something that makes them look cool for now." Subscribers may not use the service in the immediate term, Tice said. The study finds 88 percent of respondents who download video content wou
