Gawker Is Filing to Unseal the $10 Million Lawsuit Bill O’Reilly Wants to Keep Secret

Gawker Is Filing to Unseal the $10 Million Lawsuit Bill O’Reilly Wants to Keep Secret : Just this week, O’Reilly criticized Michelle Obama for her speech at the Democratic National Convention, where she spoke of watching her two daughters grow up in the White House, which was erected in the 18th century with the labor of enslaved Africans. “Slaves that worked there were well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government,” he said on The O’Reilly Factor, as if the perceived lack of food and shelter was the main disadvantage of chattel slavery, which did more to destroy black families than any other American institution.

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

Abstract. A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benefits are lost if a trusted third party is still required to prevent double-spending. We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network. The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work. The longest chain not only serves as proof of the sequence of events witnessed, but proof that it came from the largest pool of CPU power. As long as a majority of CPU power is controlled by nodes that are not cooperating to attack the network, they'll generate the longest chain and outpace attackers. The network itself requires minimal structure. Messages are broadca

With more than 100 million wireless customers, a shared view of the importance of mobile and video ad tech, a deep content focus through AOL, Verizon brings clear synergies to the table. And with their aggressive aims to grow global audience to 2B users and $20B in revenue within the mobile-media business by 2020, Yahoo’s products and brand will be central to achieving these goals. Joining forces with AOL and Verizon will help us achieve tremendous scale on mobile. Imagine the distribution challenges we will solve, the scale we will achie

What Is the Most Annoying Sound in the World? | Science | Smithsonian

What Is the Most Annoying Sound in the World? | Science | Smithsonian : Even more interesting than the rankings were the parts of the brain that lit up with activity when the research participants heard the irritating noises. The MRI scans revealed that along with the auditory cortex (which processes sounds), activity in theamygdala—the region of the brain responsible for producing emotions—increased in direct proportion to the perceived unpleasantness of the sound. The researchers found that the amygdala interacted with signals coming from the auditory cortex, increasing the amount of unpleasantness conveyed by sounds at the top of the list, which all happen to occur in thefrequency rangebetween 2,000 and 5,000 Hz.

The network of global corporate control

Stefania Vitali 1 , James B. Glattfelder 1 , and Stefano Battiston 1 ⋆ 1 Chair of Systems Design, ETH Zurich, Kreuzplatz 5, 8032 Zurich, Switzerland , ⋆ corresponding author, email: sbattiston@ethz.ch Abstract The structure of the control network of transnational corporations affects global market com- petition and financial stability. So far, only small national samples were studied and there was no appropriate methodology to assess control globally. We present the first investigation of the architecture of the international ownership network, along with the computation of the control held by each global player. We find that transnational corporations form a giant bow-tie struc- ture and that a large portion of control flows to a small tightly-knit core of financial institutions. This core can be seen as an economic “super-entity” that raises new important issues both for researchers and policy makers.

Apple rival Samsung posts high Q2 profits on rebounding phone division

Apple rival Samsung posts high Q2 profits on rebounding phone division : Although the company won't post in-depth results until later this month, Samsung said that its Q2 profits are estimated to have grown 17.4 percent year-over-year to 8.1 trillion won ($7 billion), according to Reuters. The company's mobile division is thought to have been the top profit driver. It took hits from several directions in 2015, as Apple ate into high-end phone sales with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, while Chinese firms advanced into the budget market. The Galaxy S6 meanwhile had a botched launch, with too few of the most popular models available. The company responded by streamlining its product lineup — thereby improving profit margins — and releasing the Galaxy S7, which has proven the success it was originally hoping for from the S6. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus also haven't been as popular as might have been anticipated. Apple posted its first-ever decline in iPhone sales during the March
