This may be the first legit piece of art on Vine | Death and Taxes

This may be the first legit piece of art on Vine | Death and Taxes Claire Pasquier  describes herself as a French artist living in San Francisco, and she may be one of the first people to drop a legitimate piece of art on Vine. Spreading the frames out over the course of over 9 months, she captures an entire pregnancy and resulting newborn in the course of a few-second time lapse. I can’t figure out why it’s so mesmerizing but I’ve been zoning out and staring at this thing for ten minutes.

How successful were FIFA and its sponsors at protecting their brands during the World Cup?

How successful were FIFA and its sponsors at protecting their brands during the World Cup? This article reflects on how successful FIFA and its  sponsors  were at protecting their brands during this year’s FIFA World Cup. It also looks at the extent to which non- sponsors  were able to mobilise the online population behind their clever campaigns. BACKGROUND  In what was dubbed the first proper social media World Cup by The International News Media Association (INMA) 1 , observers were keen to see how successful FIFA’s ever-vigilant rights protection strategy would be in relation to its most valuable assets, its intellectual property, especially in light of the explosion in social media coverage. It is worth noting that FIFA’s IP Manual solemnly declared that “ FIFA’s  official  logos, symbols and other graphic trade marks may not be used on any social media platform ” 2 .  FIFA had already made its intentions clear prior to the start of the tournament by filing numerous trade mark re

Cover Story | Shop Nicole's Shoot | Magazine | NET-A-PORTER.COM : At his concert on their wedding anniversary in Australia earlier this year, Urban dedicated a song to his wife with the words, ‘Eight years, baby girl. This song is for you. I love you so much.’ Even her friends, she says, were jealous of that one. “I had two girlfriends sitting with me and they were like, ‘Bitch!’” Kidman laughs. “I went, ‘Hey! I’ve been to hell and back!’” Hell was her 2001 divorce from actor Tom Cruise after 11 years of marriage and the loneliness she felt in its wake. She’s philosophical, though, about dealing with the pain. “Now I have the ability to go, ‘Okay, this too shall pass.’ Sometimes you’ve just got to navigate through pain and depression. Maybe you have a down day, but life is contrast. I’d rather feel it and know it.”

End the Tyranny of 24/7 Email - NYTimes.com

End the Tyranny of 24/7 Email - NYTimes.com : You might envy the serene workers at Daimler, the German automaker. On vacations, employees can set their corporate email to “holiday mode.” Anyone who emails them gets an auto-reply saying the employee isn’t in, and offering contact details for an alternate, on-call staff person. Then poof, the incoming email is deleted — so that employees don’t have to return to inboxes engorged with digital missives in their absence. “The idea behind it is to give people a break and let them rest,” a Daimler spokesman told Time magazine. “Then they can come back to work with a fresh spirit.”

Giving Away Photos to Make a Profit

Giving Away Photos to Make a Profit : What we’ve done is move from selling a small number of images, 40,000 or 70,000, to a small number of customers — say 30,000 — to now selling to 1.3 million customers and, including all downloads, maybe 100 million images (last quarter). We’ve essentially moved from individual sales of picture rights for a period of time to many more all-you-can-eat subscription deals, plugging into the workflow of our customer base to being almost a part of them. As we’ve moved to a much lower price per picture to many more customers and pictures, we’ve also changed our source of imagery. We have over 200,000 contributors, whereas in the old days it would be 15,000, of whom 4,000 were active

Happier Consumers Can Lead to Healthier Environment, Research Reveals

Happier Consumers Can Lead to Healthier Environment, Research Reveals WASHINGTON — The pursuit of true happiness can lead people to lifestyles that will not only be satisfying but will be better for the environment, according to an overview of psychological research presented at the American Psychological Association’s 122nd Annual Convention. “For decades, consumerism has been on a collision course with the environment, with consumer appetites draining the planet of natural resources and accelerating global warming. One view is that we need to change consumption in order to save the planet,” said Miriam Tatzel, PhD, of Empire State College. “But what if we approached it from the other way around? What if what’s good for the consumer meets what’s good for the environment?”   Positive psychology, or the study of happiness, well-being and quality of life, provides the answers to what really brings happiness to consumers, Tatzel said. Several studies have determined that peoples’ basic p

How Twitter Decides What to Place in Your Stream | Re/code

How Twitter Decides What to Place in Your Stream | Re/code : Sources familiar with the update say Twitter’s algorithm searches for popular tweets in your “social graph,” marked by actions like favorites and retweets. But it’s not showing you those tweets specifically because of one of your pal’s actions — it’s showing it to you because lots of your pals have shown interest in that tweet. This means that every tweet you favorite won’t appear in someone else’s feed — it would require engagement from a number of other people, too. Still, Twitter’s move might end up changing the way users treat the fave. Even if 50 other people favorite a tweet that Twitter surfaces, if your name is the one included in the label it certainly looks and feels like an endorsement, regardless of your intention. That’s one of the reasons people familiar with the algorithm say that Twitter is thinking about alternate, and hopefully less confusing, ways to indicate why you’re seeing one of the tweets it fou
