Football looks to cash in with broadband | News | Guardian Unlimited Football : "The high-speed internet provides broadcasters with their biggest challenge yet, writes Owen Gibson Thursday November 16, 2006 The Guardian If the defining moment in televised football in the 1980s was the introduction of regular live coverage, and Sky's millions defined the 1990s, the next quantum leap in armchair viewing is likely to take place via the broadband-enabled internet. This month alone the Premier League has trained its sights on the Google-owned video-sharing phenomenon YouTube, and Uefa has unveiled a broadband service making live and archived Champions League matches available around the world. Even a decade ago, the idea of being able to watch any European match from the past at will would have been filed under science fiction. "
European law has no place in English game - Sport - Times Online : "Richard Caborn wrote in this newspaper that he cares passionately about football. I do not doubt that; however the irony of one politician telling us about another politician’s report on how the game should be run should not be lost on anyone. Yet again, the Beautiful Game is in danger of becoming Europe’s latest political football. Ask any fan who their main rivals are or which match they care most about and the answer is local. The structure of our club football, including FA and League cups and right down through the Football League and into the Conference, is the envy of European football and no other country gets close to replicating it in terms of strength and depth or passion and participation. It is domestic club football that is the driving force behind European competition and not the other way round. When it comes to how the game should govern itself we don’t need special treatment. We have created the
Switzerland rejects UEFA demand for law against rogue advertising - Sports - International Herald Tribune : "ZURICH, Switzerland: The Swiss government has rejected calls from UEFA to tighten laws against so-called "ambush marketing" by companies who aren't official sponsors of the 2008 European Championship. Swiss daily Tages-Anzeiger reported that Switzerland will stick with its existing laws banning misleading advertising during the tournament, which the Alpine country is co-hosting with Austria, and not establish an outright ban on unlicensed advertising that refers to soccer or the 16-team competition. UEFA, according to the paper, had been lobbying the government to tighten controls on how companies can use the championship for marketing purposes. "We take note of this decision, but that's all, as far as we are concerned," UEFA spokesman Wolfgang Eichler told The Associated Press."

Review a step forward The IR was published in its final version recently, and includes a series of recommendations for football's future good health. UEFA has fully endorsed the report as an important step forward in European dialogue on sport, as well as in efforts to solve many of football's difficulties. Tribute to strength Mr Arnaut says that problem areas currently affecting European football are actually a tribute to the game's strength. Zune - a story of a suicide player

It is supposed to be the iPod killer but based on all of the early news, Zune may be well on its way to shoot itself in a foot. Few times. Here is why: The form factor It is way too big. iPod comes in 3 unique form factors and the bestselling models of iPods are the Nano's (ex mini) with super small wearable recently available Shuffle making a splash as we speak according to Apple. Therefore, in terms of shear box size Zune is "attacking" only one out of many models - premium and the most expensive "iPod with video" and without success - it is bigger and carries less capacity. Zune is heavier, taller and wider than the biggest iPod. It is 14.7 mm thick which makes it closer to Pocket PC than personal media player. Check the real life comparison photos here or here . It may sound trivial, but can you imagine women and girls carrying this huge device in their purses and pockets when there is a smaller, colorful, cooler and cheaper solution already on the market

Euro law threat to football

The Sun Online - Football: Euro law threat to football : "EUROPE%u2019S major clubs will get the green light to form breakaway leagues if radical plans being discussed by the EU become law. Franchising would also be given the thumbs-up, Celtic and Rangers would be free to join the Premiership and the Champions League could collapse. All this could be the outcome of a legal shake-up which threatens to rip apart professional football. A furious debate is raging in the European parliament over a working document, to be voted on early next year, which has been put forward by Dutch MEP Toine Manders and has sent shockwaves through the game. Manders%u2019 document is one of four submitted by different EU departments concerning the future of the game, and is by far the most revolutionary. It argues that under European legislation clubs, just like players, should be allowed complete freedom of movement. That means Celtic and Rangers would be able to join the Premiership and there is nothi

Bundesliga shows YouTube the red card

from heise.de If you enter "Bundesliga" or "Werder Bremen" in YouTube, you find a number of hits for video clips with scenes from games apparently shot by football fans using their own cell phone cameras in the stadiums, generally in miserable quality. According to Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH (DFL), the reason you do not find more material from Germany's premiere league is that the association is currently conducting a campaign to combat violations of copyright on the Internet. "The DFL cannot and will not simply stand by and watch its content being misused," the DFL's communications director Tom Bender told German daily Berliner Zeitung. In the past few weeks, the DFL has been keeping a close eye on copyright violations on the Internet. Bender told the paper, "We have discovered that the dimensions are shocking." Apparently, even live broadcasts of Bundesliga games are being offered, some even for a fee. "And downloads of game recaps

Nokia v Apple - phones to mp3

The Finnish manufacturer said in an interview with Reuters that it was selling "huge amounts" of MP3 phones and predicted it will sell around 80 million of the devices this year, up from 46.5 million in 2005. The figures will make interesting reading for Apple which sold 8.7 million of its iPods in Q3, lagging well behind the total figure for MP3 phones. Although Apple is still by far the most popular dedicated player choice, MP3 phones are, according to Nokia, catching up. Tommi Mustonen, director at Nokia's multimedia unit told Reuters that "the technology is completely ready, and the change in consumers' habits has started". Paul Jackson, principal analyst at Forrester Research thinks Mustonen's comments are "aggressive... but definitely not hot air". He explained: "Yes it is true that Nokia may well have more music players than Apple at some point but it's the classic single function versus multi-function device. Nokia may have mor

The list of 937 sites below was inspired by the list started by Bob Stumpel and then added to by many others. For our purposes, my definition is that most of these companies are, as the wikipedia says, sites that 'let people collaborate and share information online in a new way.' So, Google doesn't make the cut, because most of their traffic comes to their search engine. eBay is an 'old' company, but the many-to-many nature of the site means that they do. 'This is part of our strategy around emerging media, and we continue to look for ways to deliver unique and compelling content through our new media extensions,' Michael Lao, VP of global media for MasterCard Worldwide, told ClickZ. EA Invents New Holiday for Madden Release

EA Invents New Holiday for Madden Release : "Each year Electronic Arts takes 'truths' gleaned from fans of its Madden franchise to fuel the launch campaign for its new release. This year, the publisher has declared August 22, the release date for Madden NFL 07, a new holiday. 'We picked up on a consumer truth that people really do treat the Madden launch day as a holiday,' said Dana Glazer, senior manager of advertising at Electronic Arts. People call in sick, create fake jury summons and some break up with their girlfriends to free their schedule on launch day, Glazer said. It might not be recognized by the government or employers yet, but for the gaming community, EA's agencies Weiden & Kennedy and Freestyle Interactive worked jointly to create Maddenoliday, which includes a TV, radio and online campaign. All ads lead to a Maddenoliday microsite, which is separate from the Web site for the game itself. Emphasis will shift from the microsite to the offici

The Underground World of Private P2P Networks

The Underground World of Private P2P Networks : "While the pros and cons of P2P networks on the Web are still being debated, there are a number of private invite-only P2P networks (aka darknets) out there which enable users to get quality-approved media and software. They are decentralized, secret and almost certainly not very legal in their media-sharing activities. Many of them use the Bittorrent service. A reader who goes by the name The Rub of Clubs let me in on a few of the secrets... " (Via .)

No Big Demand for Small Screen - Los Angeles Times

No Big Demand for Small Screen - Los Angeles Times : "The survey, which asked a wide range of questions about entertainment consumption, highlighted the pervasive influence of television particularly on tween girls, a majority of whom reported that TV shows affected their dress, speech, music preferences or social activities. In addition, it found that a surprisingly high number of teenagers and young adults gleaned news from traditional media sources such as local television and network newscasts %u2014 for many through a sort of information osmosis as they absorbed news from programs their parents were watching. Perhaps most intriguing, however, was the indication of a widespread indifference toward small-screen viewing among teenagers and young adults. While many in the industry expect the demand for such content to rise dramatically in the coming years, the poll offered clues to a consumer reluctance that first must be overcome."

WSJ.com - Pop Mix: MTV's Awards Show Goes Multimedia

WSJ.com - Pop Mix: MTV's Awards Show Goes Multimedia : "MTV's Video Music Awards show has never shied from pushing the envelope in edgy programming, such as the moment when Madonna and Britney Spears kissed in the center of the stage. This year, the VMA is breaking new ground in a different way. Anxious to connect with as many young people as possible, MTV is going further than ever before in offering multiple versions of the event on several different venues. Not only will the Aug. 31 awards show be broadcast on MTV, as in the past, but for the first time MTV2, a sibling cable channel, will air its own version -- complete with live performances of hit songs. At the same time, visitors to MTV's broadband Web site MTV Overdrive will be able to watch a backstage view of the show. Separately, mtvU, a cable channel available only on college campuses, will air a college-themed VMA program. MTV will even send updates of the show to cellphone users who have signed up for wire

WSJ.com - What Are Web Surfers Seeking?

WSJ.com - Portals : "Last week, AOL released a trove of what it thought were anonymous Web-search data from 650,000 of its customers. While intending to help researchers, AOL instead set off a privacy controversy because some of the users could, in fact, be tracked down. But taking up AOL on its original intentions, I got hold of the data set -- 2.27 gigabytes' worth, loaded it into my shiny new SQL Server database software, and started my own research project into how people really use the Web. German Federation Stands to Lose out in Adidas Boot Dispute

News -- Sportcal.com : "" Soccer - 16 August 2006 Adidas, the German sportswear giant, is set to negotiate a new lower-value deal for its sponsorship of the DFB, the German soccer association, if, as seems likely, the national team’s players win the right to wear their own boots when representing their country in future. The players were reported to be ready to go on strike ahead of today’s friendly match against Sweden but it is reported that a compromise has been reached under which they will wear Adidas boots for the game in Gelsenkirchen tonight but will have a free choice starting with Germany’s European Championship qualifier against Ireland on September 2. The DFB’s sponsorship contract with kit supplier Adidas, the German sportswear giant, insists that the players wear Adidas boots, as well as shirts, shorts and socks. However, this has proved restrictive to several team members, including Miroslav Klose, the top scorer at this year’s World Cup, who are forced to chan

Gore's Current Dreams, One Year Later; Online Expansion

http://www.paidcontent.org/gores-current-dreams-one-year-later-online-expansion http://www.current.tv/ Meanwhile, some more dreaming, this one from Al Gore-backed Current TV channel, a year after it was launched. The long SFC story says it has defied critics in that year, and the idea for such a thing seems more feasible in a user-generated media world. Now carried in 30 million homes, Current will announce a plan next month for online expansion and is planning an international version next year. Madeleine Smithberg, co-creator of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” will start a daily offering this fall that’s still under wraps. The operation is making a small profit, according to Derek Baine, a senior analyst with Monterey-based Kagan Research, though I am not sure that is verifiable yet. But then, the challenges ahead are tough: Its target audience prefers YouTube’s free-form format rather than Current’s more organized site…and this is a great quote: Current “caught t
