Feed - Quora

Feed - Quora : Tim Cook is intensely, intensely private. When Steve Jobs made iMovie a flagship product, he instructed his top executives to each make a short film with the software and present. The idea of iMovie was to make computers useful and accessible to families. Other employees documented their vacations, their children's birthdays, and so on. Not Tim, his video was on the fluctuations of Palo Alto real estate prices. Although he came out publicly as gay after taking the helm of Apple, it seems as though (at least his public persona) is effectively asexual, with no romantic partners of any kind to be found in any interview or profile of him. When he was in charge of negotiating with suppliers, Cook was ruthless, both with his employees, who reported feeling used and disposable, and with Apple's manufacturing partners. One common strategy was to make a factory completely dependent on Apple's business (making them retool and train staff for Apple specific compon

The Simple Economics of Machine Intelligence

The Simple Economics of Machine Intelligence : Judgment will become more valuable When the cost of a foundational input plummets, it often affects the value of other inputs. The value goes up for complements and down for substitutes. In the case of photography, the value of the hardware and software components associated with digital cameras went up as the cost of arithmetic dropped because demand increased – we wanted more of them. These components were complements to arithmetic; they were used together. In contrast, the value of film-related chemicals fell – we wanted less of them. All human activities can be described by five high-level components: data, prediction, judgment, action, and outcomes. For example, a visit to the doctor in response to pain leads to: 1) x-rays, blood tests, monitoring (data), 2) diagnosis of the problem, such as “if we administer treatment A, then we predict outcome X, but if we administer treatment B, then we predict outcome Y” (prediction), 3) weigh

McNulty is the director of research at the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative and writes frequently about leadership and resilience. Metaphors matter. Explaining the meaning of one thing by referring to it in the familiar terminology of another shapes how we comprehend the world. ... Research has shown that three key drivers of satisfaction at work derive from feelings of competence, autonomy, and being part of a team. The good news is that as technology takes over more mundane administrative tasks, managers may be freer to foster human-centric activities that drive this engagement. More darkly, increasing aspects of our work lives may follow strict business rules that lack empathy and nuance. Reddit CEO confesses to editing comments that insulted him

Reddit CEO confesses to editing comments that insulted him : Reddit CEO Steve Huffman went a step beyond that recently when he directly meddled with comments that were critical of him. Instead of "fuck Spez" (Spez is his Reddit username), he had edited them so that it would be directed at the moderators of The_Donald, a subreddit of Trump supporters. The reason? Huffman had been the target of a series of attacks from members of The_Donald after Reddit banned a Pizzagate subreddit devoted to a conspiracy theory that linked Hillary Clinton, a Washington D.C. pizza restaurant and a pedophile ring. Even though it's been debunked, users were still posting personal information of people they claimed were involved, which prompted Huffman and co. to remove it. This, unfortunately, incited many The_Donald users to harass Huffman, calling him all manner of insults. "I messed with the "fuck u/spez" comments, replacing "spez" with r/the_donald mods for ab

The hydrogen-powered generator that was almost a home-shopping hit

The hydrogen-powered generator that was almost a home-shopping hit : ut QVC and Home Shopping Network inventor Joy Mangano, may not have been the best collaboration between superstar Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell. But the fact that Mangano inspired a major movie -- as well as her continued success -- says something about both invention and entrepreneurship. Between rapidly advancing high-tech gadgetry and the huge focus on the entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley, it's easy to forget that the umbrella of invention is much wider. As Joy shows, it's about finding a new solution to an existing problem. Easier said than done, of course.

Apple faces decade of uncertainty after next year’s iPhone - MarketWatch

Apple faces decade of uncertainty after next year’s iPhone - MarketWatch : iPhone sales are expected to peak with the release of Apple’s AAPL, -0.51% 10th anniversary iPhone next year, according to models from Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz, who predicts 245 million iPhones will sell in Apple’s 2018 fiscal year. That would reflect an increase of 9% from the fiscal 2017 FactSet consensus estimate of 225 million, and an increase of more than 15% from the fiscal year that ended in October. However, Uerkwitz believes next year’s iPhone cycle will present “one last growth hurrah” before consumers begin to drift away from the high prices Apple commands for it smartphones. Apple may struggle to raise iPhone prices meaningfully beyond the next cycle as it deals with fewer hardware breakthroughs and a narrowing performance gap between the iPhone and its closest premium-tier competitors, Uerkwitz wrote. “The risks to the company have never been greater,” said Uerkwitz, who has a perfor

Apple's latest secret: Its advertising budget | Cult of Mac : Whether it’s its new heartwarming Christmas ad or its giant iPhone 7 billboards, Apple frequently leads the way on both quality and quantity for its advertising. But according to Apple’s most recent 10-K annual report, recently filed with the SEC, it’s no longer revealing what it spends to get to this point. Scientists finally know what caused London's 'killer fog' - Business Insider

Scientists finally know what caused London's 'killer fog' - Business Insider : “Our results showed that this process was facilitated by nitrogen dioxide, another co-product of coal burning, and occurred initially on natural fog. Another key aspect in the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfate is that it produces acidic particles, which subsequently inhibits this process. Natural fog contained larger particles of several tens of micrometres in size, and the acid formed was sufficiently diluted. Evaporation of those fog particles then left smaller acidic haze particles that covered the city.” Similar things are happening in China’s most polluted cities right now. The reason there hasn’t been an incident like London’s “killer fog” is down to chemical happenstance: China uses a lot of fertiliser and that, combined with the heavy road traffic, results in high levels of ammonia, whichneutralises the particles. “The right chemical processes have to interplay for the deadly haz

Steve Bannon Trump Tower Interview: Trump's Strategist Plots "New Political Movement" | Hollywood Reporter : "Darkness is good," says Bannon, who amid the suits surrounding him at Trump Tower, looks like a graduate student in his T-shirt, open button-down and tatty blue blazer — albeit a 62-year-old graduate student. "Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That's power. It only helps us when they" — I believe by "they" he means liberals and the media, already promoting calls for his ouster — "get it wrong. Eye Direction and Lying - How to detect lies from the direction of an individual's gaze / visual accessing cues. : In reality, it would be foolish to make such a snap judgment without further investigation... but the technique does have some merit. So, here it is... read, ponder and test it on your friends and family to see how reliable it is for yourself. Visual Accessing Cues - "Lying Eyes" The first time "Visual Accessing Cues" were discussed (at least to my knowledge), was by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in their book "Frogs into Princes: Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) " From their experiments this is what they found. When asked a question a "normally organized" right-handed person looks (from your viewpoint, looking at them): Up and to the Left Indicates: Visually Constructed Images (Vc) If you asked someone to "Imagine a purple buffalo", this would be the direction their eyes moved in while thinkin

The truth about lying: it's the hands that betray you, not the eyes | The Independent : Prof Wiseman, a psychologist from the University of Hertfordshire, said: "The results of the first study revealed no relationship between lying and eye movements, and the second showed that telling people about the claims made by NLP practitioners did not improve their lie detection skills." A follow-up study involving analysing videos of high-profile press conferences in which people appealed for help in finding missing relatives, or claimed to have been themselves the victims of crime. While some were telling the truth, others turned out to be lying. There was no evidence of a correlation between lying and eye movements. Co-author Dr Caroline Watt, from the University of Edinburgh, said: "A large percentage of the public believes that certain eye movements are a sign of lying, and this idea is even taught in organisational training courses. Snap's Spectacles Are the Beginning of a Camera-First Future | WIRED : The best hint for what Snap in particular might be planning comes from that very same Vergence Labs StartX application video. In it, Rodriguez holds up a matte black visor that looks a bit like 24th-century armor. He excitedly describes the Android-powered system he built, which uses computer vision and his Facebook account to figure out who he’s looking at. The goal was to “redefine the future of face-to-face interaction.” It was just a prototype, but it was the endgame. Not long after that, Rodriguez posted a now-deleted answer to a Quora question titled, “Will augmented reality products like Google Glass and Epiphany Eyewear make phones become obsolete?” He talked about adding displays that can show text and images, supporting eye-tracking and mind-reading, and eventually building glasses that can render true augmented reality. “We’re some serious R&D away from this future,” he wrote, “but it’s doable a

Alec Baldwin Responds to Donald Trump's 'SNL' Criticism - Rolling Stone : "You know what I would do if I were Prez? I'd be focused on how to improve the lives of AS MANY AMERICANS AS POSSIBLE. I'd be focused on improving our reputation abroad, including actually fighting for freedom and not just oil. I would make every effort 2 retrain Americans so 2 cre8 jobs. 1 way u make America gr8 again is 2 put it back 2 work." Baldwin then touched on the controversial appointments of Steve Bannon and Alabama senator Jeff Sessions to high-power positions. "I would make appointments that encouraged people, not generate fear and doubt," Baldwin added. After Trump was elected as the 45th president, and after Dave Chappelle hosted a Baldwin-less episode of SNL, it was unclear whether the actor would return to the role, especially after Baldwin criticized executives who "killed" any of SNL's attempts to sway voters. However, Baldwin was back as

e loss of trust and the Great Disorder By Dylan GRice

At its most fundamental level, economic activity is no more than an exchange between strangers. It depends, therefore, on a degree of trust between strangers. Since money is the agent of exchange, it is the agent of trust. Debasing money therefore debases trust. History is replete with Great Disorders in which social cohesion has been undermined by currency debasements. e multi-decade credit in a- tion can now be seen to have had similarly corrosive e ects. Yet central banks continue down the same route. e writing is on the wall. Further debasement of money will cause further debasement of society. I fear a Great Disorder. I am more worried than I have ever been about the clouds gathering today. I hope they pass without breaking, but I fear the de ning feature of coming decades will be a Great Disorder of the sort which has de ned past epochs and scarred whole generations. “Next to language, money is the most important medium through which modern societies communi- cate,” writes Be

Harvard psychologist Amy Cuddy says people judge you on 2 criteria - Business Insider : People size you up in seconds, but what exactly are they evaluating? Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy has been studying first impressions alongsidefellow psychologists Susan FiskeandPeter Glickfor more than 15 years, and has discovered patterns in these interactions. In her new book, "Presence," Cuddy says that people quickly answer two questions when they first meet you: Can I trust this person? Can I respect this person? Psychologists refer to these dimensions as warmth and competence, respectively, and ideally you want to be perceived as having both.

The Last Popular Delusions Cockroaches for the long run!

All good things come to an end, sadly. So it is with my time here alongside Albert, Andy and the rest of the gang at SG. I’m signing off, checking out, moving on to pastures new. It’s been a wonderful time. But after three years of trying to sound clever it’s time for me to do something altogether more difficult, and actually be clever. So early next year, I will join a small but outstanding investment practice. Naturally, I hope it will be a great success. But what makes a great success? Who killed the newspaper? | The Economist

Who killed the newspaper? | The Economist “A GOOD newspaper, I suppose, is a nation talking to itself,” mused Arthur Miller in 1961. A decade later, two reporters from the Washington Post wrote a series of articles that brought down President Nixon and the status of print journalism soared. At their best, newspapers hold governments and companies to account. They usually set the news agenda for the rest of the media. But in the rich world newspapers are now an endangered species. The business of selling words to readers and selling readers to advertisers, which has sustained their role in society, is falling apart (see article).

The Best Productivity Tricks Used By Evil Dictators

The Best Productivity Tricks Used By Evil Dictators : Napoleon Bonaparte, of course, did the same thing as he worked his way through the French Revolution (before eventually installing himself as a dictator). Vladimir Lenin was extremely well read, but still spent his time practicing his craft, writing pamphlets, and talking with his people. Mao took this a step further and used his peasant upbringing not just as an excuse not to shower, but also as fuel for his control over peasents.

We Took Apart Some Beats Headphones and Here's What We Found | The Huffington Post : The brilliant thing here is that the two large metal parts are not mirror images of each other — they are actually the same part! This means that only one tool would need to be made to produce both parts, which saves money in tool design and number of tools. It also makes the headphones easier to assemble, since there are fewer unique parts.

Here’s how Facebook plans to fix its fake-news problem - Recode : That will still be possible, of course, but Zuckerberg outlined a number of other updates that are apparently in the works. A few of the potential changes: Adding a warning label to stories that users have flagged as inaccurate. Working with more third-party fact checking organizations. Improving the accuracy of “related articles” that it suggests for users to read. Blocking fake news distributors from paying to promote their content. (Facebook started that process this week.) Building better algorithms to automatically detect fake news. “This means better technical systems to detect what people will flag as false before they do it themselves,” Zuckerberg wrote. Zuckerberg did not say when these updates will be active or available, but did stress that it won’t be a simple fix. “Some of these ideas will work well, and some will not,” he wrote.

Mac Rumors: Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About Two months later, it now turns out those reports were accurate. In an interview with Reuters, McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt confirmed McLaren was in discussions with Apple, but he said the talks never progressed towards a definitive proposition. He also ruled out a takeover bid from Apple. "There wasn't a bid from Apple," said Flewitt. "They visited. We talked. We talked about what they did. We talked about what we did. They toured. It never matured to a definitive proposition," he said. McLaren previously said it was "not in discussion with Apple in respect of any potential investment," a seemingly purposefully vague statement that did not rule out discussions between the companies entirely. Financial Times reporter Tim Bradshaw rightly stood by his story despite McLaren's statement.

Last night was Max's first election. She's got a lot of election nights ahead of her.  Holding Max, I thought about all the work ahead of us to create the world we want for our children. This work is bigger than any presidency and progress does not move in a straight line. The most important opportunities of Max's generation -- like curing all disease, improving education, connecting everyone and promoting equal opportunity -- will take long term focus and finding new ways for all of us to work together, sometimes over decades. Hillary Clinton Blames F.B.I. Director for Election Loss - The New York Times : In her most extensive remarks since she conceded the race to Donald J. Trump early Wednesday, Mrs. Clinton told donors on a 30-minute conference call that Mr. Comey’s decision to send a letter to Congress about the inquiry 11 days before Election Day had thrust the controversy back into the news and had prevented her from ending the campaign with an optimistic closing argument. “There are lots of reasons why an election like this is not successful,” Mrs. Clinton said, according to a donor who relayed the remarks. But, she added, “our analysis is that Comey’s letter raising doubts that were groundless, baseless, proven to be, stopped our momentum.” Mrs. Clinton said a second letter from Mr. Comey, clearing her once again, which came two days before Election Day, had been even more damaging. In that letter, Mr. Comey said an examination of a new trove of emails, which had been found on the computer of Ant

The iPhone Is Bigger than Donald Trump Why we are not going to stay under the covers, despite all temptation. If there are two Americas  — and why bother saying "if"? — the staff of Backchannel clearly belongs to the country now in shock — and frankly, terrified — at what this other country has thrust upon us.
